# Check an AI output before you sign it

Topic: Artificial intelligence · Duration: 20-30 min · Updated on 2026-09-15

## In brief

A model writes the most likely continuation: it can produce a reference, a value or a source that does not exist, in the same confident tone as when it is right. The check never triggers itself. Before anything goes out, trace every statement back to the documents you supplied, open the sources cited, compare two successive answers, and note what you have checked. The signature is yours, and so is the responsibility.

## Programme

- 1. What you will not see go by : Gauge why an AI answer can be wrong without any signal warning you
- 2. Check before you sign : Trigger the checking that a model never does on its own, and document the control
- 3. Your action plan : Turn the review into a dated, recorded habit that holds in your working week

1 content sections, each with its quiz. Three level quizzes: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert.

### 1. Nobody reopened the document

A well-written note, structured, with a firm conclusion. It circulates, it gets reused, it ends up in a file. Months later, someone opens the link to the source cited: the page exists, the figure announced does not. Nobody had looked before it went out. The tool did nothing abnormal. And the name at the bottom of the document is that of someone from your structure.

### 2. By the end, you will be able to

- Spot the places in an output where the error hides
- Check a figure, a source and a reference before it goes out
- Word a request that stops the assistant from flattering you

### 3. Four signals that should send you back to the document

None of them proves an error. Each marks a place where your review should linger.
- A precise value where you expected a range
- The name of a body cited with no link to its publication
- A conclusion sharper than your own notes
- A subject that nobody around you masters

### 4. Where do you stand?

One question before you start. It bears on the only moment that counts: the one where you decide to trust an answer.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does a serious review of an AI output take?

Less than the writing, more than nothing. On a short piece with nothing at stake, a few minutes are enough. On a document that carries your signature, allow the time to open every source cited and to find every statement again in the documents you supplied. If that takes longer than writing it yourself, the task was not the right candidate.

### Is asking the assistant to check its own answer enough?

No. A second pass produces a text about checking, not a check. The model can confirm its own error with just as much confidence, or change its mind for no reason. What it can do is list the points it could not support with a document, if you ask the question in the negative. Checking the facts stays manual: you open the source.

### Should you keep a written record of the review of a document produced with AI?

It is what protects you the day the document is challenged. Note in the file what you checked, against which source, and on which date. One line is enough. Without that record, you will not be able to show that the check took place, and the output will look like an unreviewed copy-paste.
