Digital skills courses for welders: protecting the drawings, the workshop and subcontracting

In brief

A welder works for contracting clients who send over drawings, qualified processes and specifications. Those files are somebody else's industrial property, and they travel through mailboxes, USB sticks and workshop tablets. A workshop is an information system, even without an office

The workshop went digital in small touches: a tablet for the work orders, a shared computer for the drawings, a numerically controlled machine wired to the network to receive its programs, a personal phone used to photograph a part. Each of these is a door. None of them was chosen as one, which is exactly why they are nearly always left open: a single account shared by the team, a password pinned up next to the machine, a USB stick that travels from the design office to the machine with nobody checking it. The course turns that inventory into habits that hold up on a production day.

The subcontracting chain has become a selection criterion

Large industrial clients are required to assess the security of their supply chain. In practice that comes back down as questionnaires, contract clauses and sometimes audits at the subcontractor's premises. A workshop that cannot answer “who has access to our drawings, and how are they backed up” loses contracts before any incident has even happened. The course “Cybersecurity: the fundamentals for protecting your work” gives the concrete answers and the habits that make them true: named accounts, encrypted storage devices, an offline backup that has been tested, and an access list you can produce on the day somebody asks you for it.

Industrial phishing does not look like consumer phishing

It does not take the form of a fake parcel notice, but of a fake invitation to tender, a modified drawing as an attachment, or a change of bank details from a regular supplier. Bank transfer fraud aims precisely at organisations where one person approves the payments alone. The simulator in the phishing course reproduces these scenarios in the vocabulary of the workshop: order, delivery note, late part, urgent request from the contracting client. What you learn there is the only habit that works: check through a channel different from the one carrying the request.

Artificial intelligence in the workshop: useful, and worth watching

The uses are already here, often arriving through a personal phone: having a specification written in English translated, rewording a non-conformity report, preparing a written reply to a contracting client. The gain falls on the writing part of the job, the part nobody enjoys. Two limits frame it. The data: a customer's drawing, a process specification, a set of requirements under a non-disclosure agreement stop being under the company's control the moment they enter a freely accessible service. The checking: on a technical subject the error lodges where it costs most — a grade of material, a preheating temperature, a standard reference.

What welders ask us

Why train a welder in cybersecurity?

Because they handle drawings that are not theirs, use removable storage and connected tablets, and are often the first to receive a file sent by a contracting client. A workshop workstation is an entry point like any other, and it is rarely treated as one.

Are numerically controlled machines concerned?

Yes, as soon as they receive their programs over the network or on a USB stick. A machine that has been running for ten years on a system that is never updated is one of the most fragile pieces of equipment in the company, and stopping it costs production immediately.

How much time does it take?

A course takes one to two hours to work through, section by section, and can be picked up again at any point. The quiz of the day then offers a few spaced revision questions to anchor what you have seen, without spending another whole hour on it.

Is there a certificate I can show a contracting client?

Yes. Passing a levelled quiz issues a certificate in your name with a public verification page, valid for twelve months. It states the course taken, the level reached and the date of success, and its authenticity can be checked online by anyone holding the link.

Can I have a customer specification translated by an AI?

Not by dropping the customer's document into a freely accessible service: it belongs to the contracting client and would then leave the workshop's control. To understand a term or a turn of phrase, ask the question without attaching the file or the project references, and have any technical point confirmed by the person who qualified the process.
